Missouri Tigers: Depth Chart and Breakout Players For 2014

facebooktwitterreddit

College Football season is right around the corner and back in March, the Missouri Tigers released a depth chart for the coming year. As we draw closer to kicking off the 2014 season, it’s time to start breaking it down.

After the major loss in the spring of Wide Receiver Dorial Green-Beckham, in addition to the losses of Earnest Payton, Trent Hosick and DeQuinton Osborne the Depth chart has definitely changed and the term, “next man up” will show new meaning.

Here’s a quick look at the players at each position on offense and analysis of potential breakout players:

QB:

Maty Mauk (So.), Corbin Berkstresser (Jr.), Eddie Printz (RSFr.), Marvin Zanders (Fr.), Colby Carpenter (RSFr.)

RB:

Russell Hansbrough (Jr.), Marcus Murphy (Sr.), Morgan Steward (So.), Tyler Hunt (Jr.), Miles Drummond (So.), Andrew Stevens (So.), Steven Blakley (RSFr.)

X:

Wesley Leftwich (Jr.), Eric Laurent (So.), Cameron Chancey (Jr.)

Y:

Bud Sasser (Sr.), Levi Copelin (So.), James Driskell (So.)

TE:

Sean Culkin (So.), Clayton Echard (Jr.), Jason Reese (RSFr.), Tyler Hanneke (So.), Austin Ray (RSFr.)

LT:

Mitch Morse (Sr.), Clay Rhodes (RSFr.), Adam Ploudre (RSFr.), Jordan Hill (Fr.)

LG:

Anthony Gatti (Sr.), Jordan Williams (So.), Kyle Starke (Jr.), Mitch H. Hall (Jr.)

C:

Evan Boehm (Jr.), Brad McNulty (Jr.), Alec Abeln (RSFr.), William Johnson (So.)

RG:

Mitch L. Hall (Jr.), Stephen Carberry (Sr.), Mike Fairchild (Fr.), John Reid (RSFr.)

RT:

Connor McGovern (Jr.), Taylor Chappell (Jr.), Nick Monaghan (Jr.)

Offensive Breakout Performers:

Marcus Murphy:

Murphy over the last couple of years has been an electrifying presence in the return game, in the backfield as well as the slot. In my opinion, with more opportunities this season, he will have a big year being a security blanket for Mauk and his game breaking speed will start to light up the SEC.

  • Bud Sasser:

No, Sasser isn’t DGB, L’Damian Washington or even Marcus Lucas; and no one is going to pretend he is. However, he has been the most consistent receiver we have in the team’s current receiving corps and there’s definitely something to be said for that. Mauk will need someone to throw to and Sasser might have a chance to become a favorite receiver for the thriving young quarterback.

    Maty Mauk:

Most people would say that Mauk already broke out last year with his tremendous performances filling in at the end of the season for James Franklin. I think he’s just getting started. I’m not saying he’s going to go into Johnny Football territory just yet, but he’s the real deal. His intangibles may carry the Tigers all the way to the top of the SEC East once again.
