Mizzou football continues to hold strong on defense against a solid rushing team in Ole Miss.

Mizzou football is doing fine despite losing linebacker Cale Garrett in last week’s game.

The Tigers lead Ole Miss 12-7 after two quarters in their homecoming matchup.

Mizzou struggled early on, but that was all. The Rebels got help after a fumble by Johnathon Johnson, subbing in as a punt returner. He muffed the first punt and set Ole Miss up with good field position.

Freshman quarterback John Rhys Plumlee nailed his running back Scottie Phillips in the back of the end zone for 21 yards on third down for an early 7-0 lead. That short field was all the points Mizzou would surrender.

The most notable plays came at the end of the first half. Facing the Ole Miss rushing attack inside the 2-yard line, Mizzou stopped the Rebels three times, including a fourth-and-goal. Linebacker Nick Bolton, who is taking over for Garrett as the top guy in the middle, was in on the stoppage that has kept Mizzou ahead 12-7 at the half.

As for the offense, Mizzou got the running game going late in the second half.

Before that, the Tigers scored on a screen pass to Tyler Badie. Mizzou has two Tucker McCann field goals for the 12-7 total. McCann did miss an extra point.

In the second half, look for Mizzou’s rushing game to get going more. Kelly Bryant’s numbers are good for the opening half. The senior is 13 of 19 for 142 yards and the touchdown. He’ll be aided by more attempts from Larry Rountree III and Badie. Mizzou has 69 yards rushing between the three of them.

On the other side, Ole Miss sat its freshman QB for the final drive. He’s been getting hit a lot, and he’ll probably come back in, but it’s possible not at 100 percent.

Mizzou is playing after No. 3 Georgia was upset by South Carolina 20-17 in double overtime earlier in the day. No. 7 Florida currently is playing No. 5 LSU and is a quarter behind the Tigers.

The Tigers could be in first place in the SEC East after Saturday night, but no matter what, they have a better shot to win the division before the day started.
