Kansas football coach Charlie Weis wants his team to get better at celebrating victories

Most coaches inheriting a roster like Kansas’ would be more concerned with their team getting better at, you know, achieving victories. Or maybe, as someone accustomed to a football team that hasn’t had a losing season in seven years, my opinion is off-base.

Weis had his team practice celebrating a “game-winning” field goal by kicker Ron Doherty. Of course, Doherty missed his first attempt and had to try again before they could actually celebrate. Seriously. Could this get any more embarrassing for the Jayhawks?

Oh wait, it did. Weis was captured on video critiquing the team’s celebration technique. It starts at about 1:30 in the video.

As transcribed by the Kansas City Star‘s Rustin Dodd:

Weis: “I can tell you guys aren’t used to winning. (Pause) Hey. Hey, fellas. OK. Winning a football game is not supposed to be an uncommon occurrence. I know that’s a novel concept around here.

“OK. When you win a football game, there’s supposed to be a celebration that looks like a celebration. And that was a pile of crap.

“I believe in practicing everything, including winning. That’s what this is all about.

“This isn’t about you guys jacking around over here.

“This is about, third game of the season, you’re sitting here 2-0. You’re playing TCU, you haven’t won a conference game in about eight years. (bells) … and you hit a field goal to win the game. Act that way!”

Yahoo! Sports writer, and Mizzou journalism school alumnus Pat Forde pointed out yet another layer of humor in the situation:

When a team is so bad even its own coach is mocking its lack of conference success, that’s pretty bad. Bad enough for it to be front-page material for at least one national news outlet:

Normally Kansas football isn’t a laughingstock until after the football season starts, so technically Weis is a few months ahead of schedule. And he’s gotten us talking about practice…

It has been a Final Four defined by rematches, and tonight’s NCAA Championship game between the No. 1 Kentucky Wildcats (37-2) and the No. 2 Kansas Jayhawks (32-6) is no exception in more ways than one.

The two teams faced each other in the second game of the season on Nov. 15 at Madison Square Garden. The Wildcats emerged victorious 75-65 behind a balanced attack with five players scoring in double figures, including 17 points from sophomore guard Doron Lamb (13.2 PPG, 2.9 RPG) and 14 points and seven blocks from freshman phenom and player of the candidate Anthony Davis (14.3 PPG, 10.0 RPG, 4.6 BPG). Kansas got 22 points from senior guard Tyshawn Taylor (16.5 PPG, 4.8 APG), despite shooting 3-13 from the field, but did not have enough production from his supporting cast to make a game out of it.

This is also a rematch of the 2008 NCAA Championship Game, not between UK and KU, but between the team’s respective coaches, John Calipari and Bill Self. That game was one for the ages, defined by Memphis’ struggles from the free throw line late in the game and Kansas’ Mario Chalmers drilling a three-pointer with 2.1 seconds left in the game to send it into overtime, where the Jayhawks eventually prevailed 75-68. (more…)

The Kentucky Wildcats defeated in-state rival Louisville tonight by a score of 69-61. The Wildcats were once again led by Anthony Davis, who scored 18 points, adding in 14 rebounds and five blocks. Kentucky will play Kansas for the national championship on April 2nd.

The Wildcats pulled off this win despite being outrebounded 40-33, including getting outdone 19-6 on the offensive glass. What put Kentucky over the top was their lights-out shooting, making 57% of their field goals.

Kentucky jumped out to an early lead, and held a 13-point lead early in the second half, but Louisville wouldn’t go down without a fight. The Cardinals went on a 15-2 run to tie the game at 49 with 9:11 to play. Two baskets by Michael Kidd-Gilchrist gave the Wildcats room to breathe.

This is Kentucky’s first time in the championship game since 1998, when they won the title. Calipari faced the Jayhawks in the title game once before in 2008, where his Memphis Tigers lost to the Jayhawks in overtime.
