Today in Mizzou News: MU Dominates CBE Classic
Zoulogy staff writer Kevin Acciani said announcer Dick Vitale was correct in labeling the Tigers’ 92-53 CBE Championship victory over Notre Dame last night as “Varsity versus JV.”
The Tigers’ win was Mizzou’s largest margin of victory against a ranked opponent since “at least 1949,” according to MUtigers.com.
The Associated Press said the Tigers have “reason to believe they’ll win more championships before the season is over.”
FoxSports Midwest columnist B.J. Rains says the Tigers “look poised for an historic season.”
MU basketball coach Frank Haith said after the CBE championship game, “If our post guys buy in to what they need to do, we can have a successful season.”
The Tribune’s Steve Walentik said Haith was “eager to see how his team would respond with a title on the line.”
The Tigers “absolutely demolished” California.
California basketball coach Mike Montgomery said the Golden Bears “knew it was a tough matchup from the get-go.”
ESPN’s Jason King said “it may be time to catapult the No. 21 Tigers into the top 10.”
Kim English called this year’s Mizzou basketball team is “the most selfless team I’ve played on.”
Guard Steve Moore was trending nationally on Twitter, per the Post-Dispatch’s Vahe Gregorian.
MU is hosting a rally the night before its game against Kansas.
Zoulogy staff writer Joe Proszek is chronicling memorable games from the Tigers’ rivalry with Kansas every day this week. Yesterday he featured legendary Mizzou football coach Don Faurot’s last game, a 15-13 victory over Kansas. On Monday he recapped Mizzou’s first-ever Homecoming game, a 3-3 tie with Kansas in 1911.
Kansas football coach Turner Gill opened his media day press conference by saying “Good morning. The Border Showdown. Kansas-Missouri. I don’t know if anything else needs to be said.”
The Topeka Chronicle-Journal’s Jayson Jenks wonders if Gill can save his job by beating Missouri.
Gill says the Jayhawks “have a good foundation here.”
The Chronicle-Journal’s Kevin Haskin said Gill failed to “adjust to the competition and to situations” by not acknowledging the significance of Saturday’s game.
Kansas’ football players want to continue the Border War rivalry.
Kansas’ administration does not wish to do so. Looks like you can’t spell “quit” without KU.
MU opened the week as 22.5-point favorites against Kansas.
One sports wagering advisor suggests taking the points, but not betting on Kansas to win outright.
Eight players on Kansas’ team are from Missouri.
The Austin American-Statesman notes both the Texas-Texas A&M rivalry and the Missouri-Kansas rivalry will both end on Saturday.
Kansas’ official website notes the Jayhawks are 7-3 overall in games played specifically on Nov. 26.
Last year’s MU-KU game was the Tigers’ largest margin of victory over the Jayhawks since 1988.
Zoulogy staff writer Ben Wilson said Missouri “should emerge victorious with relative ease.”
MU will be hosting a banquet to honor its football team on Sunday.
Tigers receiver T.J. Moe is the Big 12’s Community of Champions winner.
Moe said he has been banned from speaking about Kansas after saying last year he wanted to burn Kansas shirts when he saw them in the mall.
Moe also said suspended football coach Gary Pinkel doesn’t need to apologize to his team.
Did the media go too far in its coverage of Pinkel’s arrest?
MU junior golfer Jace Long was named one of 29 All-Americans in his sport.
Mizzou’s baseball field was named Field of the Year by the Sports Turf Managers Association.
