Missouri Tigers Baseball Off To Best Start Since Joining SEC

Missouri Tigers Baseball is in a nice spot right now. 20 games into the season, Mizzou finds itself in a groove that the school hasn’t seen in years on the baseball diamond. And it continued last night.

With Missouri’s 6-0 win over Air Force last night, Missouri has won its previous six games, and eight of its last 10. The Tigers are coming off a 3-game sweep of Georgia over the weekend, their first sweep against a conference opponent since joining the SEC.

This is all part of jumping out to a 16-4 record so far this season, their best start since 2008.

In last night’s game, you could find the team’s M.V.P thus far in sophomore Ryan Howard doing nothing but total a career-best 4 RBI, which came during an outburst of hitting for the Tigers to start the game. MU scored two quick runs in the first inning and essentially never looked back.

But it was senior pitcher John Miles, who tossed a gem on Tuesday night, that stole the show. Keeping Air Force scoreless in six innings of play, he allowed just three hits, and the Falcons never got past first base. Miles’ performance lead to Mizzou’s fifth shutout win of the season and contributed to a Tigers pitching staff season effort that has them ranking 2nd in the SEC.

So, is this a sign of arrival for the Missouri Tigers baseball program? The school struggled early on to break out during SEC play in the first two seasons in the conference. Baseball in Columbia hasn’t exactly been relevant in a few years. But Tiger fans have learned in the past from the football team that Mizzou has nurtured this program to be ready for the tough league play sooner than expected.

Mizzou will get more opportunities to prove its worth on the road next week when the team travels to Baton Rouge to take on arguably the conference’s best team in LSU.

Last night the Missouri Tigers baseball team once again started another series with a win (they’re undefeated in series openers). They’ll continue the three-game series with Air Force tonight at Taylor Stadium in Columbia.
