Missouri Tigers Baseball Shuts Down South Carolina
By Derek Franks
Close but no cigar. The sweep didn’t happen. But, the second conference series win of the season did.
In a week of impressive performances from their hitters, the Missouri Tigers won their first series against a Top 10 team since 2006, after winning two of three games against No. 6 South Carolina.
Missouri won the first game 4-1 at Taylor field, giving S.C. its first loss in six games. In the second game of the series, the Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead before surrendering the lead to the Gamecocks. The two SEC East rivals needed ten innings to settle the game, with the Tigers winning off a walk off hit from Trey Harris.
In the third game, Mizzou had a golden opportunity to win in come back fashion, but Harris was unable to deliver late with the bases loaded. Mizzou fell 7-5, but was able to walk away proud earning the win against a top ten team.
Mizzou has turned the tide this year. With a 5-1 conference record to start the season, the Tigers are within one conference win of tying their mark from all of last year (they went 6-24 in the SEC, in case you were wondering).
This is suddenly a team that can contend, and it will be interesting to see if the Missouri Tigers can be relevant—or perhaps a force on the baseball diamond again.
The next two series will be telling. Mizzou plays 10th ranked Arkansas Pine Bluff next to round out the home stand before venturing to College Station to take on the top ranked team in the nation, Texas A&M.
