Missouri Tigers Football: Who Returns Kicks

Dear Trumans Tales,

Who will fill in for the Missouri Tigers as kick return specialist next season after the graduation of Marcus Murphy?

Allen in Lee’s Summit

Great question Allen. With the loss of the reigning SEC special teams player of the year in Marcus Murphy to graduation, it’s a sort of puzzle as to whom might take his place.

So, here’s the short answer:

Right now, the Tigers currently have cornerback John Gibson listed as the kick returner on the roster. Gibson will be backed up by Anthony Sherrils. Sherrils is currently listed as the returner on punts. Second year wide receiver J’mon Moore is listed as an alternate to both.

Now for the long answer:

This literally could be anyone’s position. Gibson showed his great speed and elusiveness last season on interceptions and on fill in duty as a return specialist. He’s fast. He’s agile, and he can make people miss. But Gibson doesn’t have height on his side, nor does he the fact that he missed playing time with injury last season.

With a slew of young players—and with Sherrils and Moore both riding his coattails, I can easily see someone over taking him by the time fall rolls around.

There are freshman that we haven’t seen as well, in addition to the receivers that we plug in all the voids and running back Chase Abbington, who transfers from junior college next season.

So, to answer your question, we don’t know yet. What we do know is that Gibson, Sherrils and Moore are what the team has listed.
