Why SEC expansion makes sense for 14 teams
North Carolina
GigEmGazette went in one direction, but I’m staying in the ACC for a minute. You can’t add Duke to the SEC, and not offer North Carolina, as well. Truth-be-told, the Tar Heels would probably love to be rid of Duke from the ACC, but the only thing separating the two schools is 11 miles of Tobacco Road.
I feel like if Carolina left for the SEC, then Duke just might follow, or vice versa. Both fanbases would probably scoff at me, but I don’t think you can be that close, yet be so far apart. The rivalry must live on, and what Carolina could bring to the ACC, especially in basketball, would be aces for the SEC.
Once again, the Southeast Conference would be adding another national champion into the fold. GG has the Tar Heels at No. 2, with a 65% chance of joining the SEC, especially with tensions between the State of North Carolina and the ACC conference over “HB2.”
But for lost revenue, “HB2” issue seems to have been resolved, and leaves behind a sour taste. I like the odds of Carolina realigning to the SEC and keeping the Tobacco Road rivalry alive and well.
