Baseball did not have a good week, going 1-3 in midweek action against Missouri State and a weekend series at Ole Miss. Softball was not much better. After picking up three wins out of conference, they were swept by Kentucky over the weekend.

Baseball

Connor Brumfield scored two runs against Missouri State on Tuesday, but it was not enough as the visitors prevailed, 5-3.

Andy Toelken pitched 7.1 innings for Missouri, but a two-run homer in the third was the catalyst for the Bears. Allowing just six hits, Toelken didn’t make many mistakes, but when he did, the Bears made him pay.

On Friday, Cole Bartlett pitched all nine for Mizzou and led them to a 9-3 win in Oxford. With the score tied at two, Brumfield hit a solo shot to give the Tigers the lead, and they didn’t look back. That was as good as their fortunes would get.

The offense went quiet in game two, as the Rebels won 3-1; in the rubber match on Sunday, the Rebs went up 9-1 after four innings. The comeback by the Tigers fell short as the Rebels won, 9-6.

Next they go to Springfield to take on the Bears and then host Texas A&M this weekend.

Softball

It was about as good of a start to the week as you could ask for the for the Tigers.

During the doubleheader against Southeast Missouri, the Tigers bats came out in full force as they scored 23 runs and batted over .500 in two games (30/59).

In game one, freshman Braxton Burnside went 4-4 and hit a grand slam to end the game, four of her five RBIs in game one.

In the second game, a 9-1 win for the Tigers, sophomore Kolby Romaine went 4-4 and had three RBIs. Over the two games, sophomore Rylee Pierce went 4-6 and scored four runs.

On Wednesday night, the Tigers hosted Nebraska-Omaha, which looked like another runaway, but got close at the end. Mizzou scored seven runs in the first three innings, including a two-run homer from catcher Kirsten Mack. The visitors got two runs back in the sixth and two more in the seventh, but it was not enough as the Tigers staved off the comeback attempt.

Over the weekend, No. 20 Kentucky came to town. Down 4-0 in the opener, Mack and Pierce both hit solo shots late, but it was not enough.

On Saturday, the Wildcats silenced the Tigers bats as Kentucky won 4-0.

On Sunday, things looked promising as the Tigers led 4-0 after one, mostly thanks to a three-run bomb by Burnside. They led 7-2 after three, but a six-run sixth propelled the visitors to a 10-8 win and series sweep.

The will be in action next this coming weekend in Baton Rouge as they take on #16 LSU.

Track and Field

Perhaps the lone bright spot of the weekend in Mizzou sports was the track and field teams at the John McDowell Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Gabi Jacobs won both shotput and discus for the women, the other first place finishers were Patrick Kunza and Rebecca Keating in the hammer throw and the women’s 4×400 relay team won first place. Their time of 3:40.08 was the fourth-fastest in program history.

They will be in action this coming weekend at the Drake relays in Des Moines, Iowa from the 27-29th.

Tennis

The season drew to a close this week as the tennis team competed in the SEC tournament. In the first round matchup against Ole Miss, the Rebels took it 4-2.

The Rebs won all three doubles matchups to secure a point there, and then won the one, five, and six flight singles. The second flight did not finish, but Cassidy Spearman won the third flight, and Mackenzy Middlebrooks won the fourth flight.
