As final exams are happening, the sports seasons are winding down. In the second-to-last weekend of the season, baseball took two-of-three from South Carolina. Track competed in the SEC Championships, and softball got its assignment for the NCAA tournament.

Baseball

In the history of the athletic department, the Tigers have two team national titles. One of them is in baseball. South Carolina won back-to-back titles on the diamond in 2010 and 2011.

The Gamecocks won the first game in the series on Friday, 4-3, with a couple of two-run homers powering the visitors.

Mizzou took a 2-0 lead in the third before falling behind 4-2. In the eighth, Connor Brumfield hit an RBI single to close the gap to 4-3, and that’s how the game would end.

In the second game, Robbie Glendinning had two RBI singles to power Mizzou to a 5-3 win. After falling behind 3-1, the Tigers scored four unanswered runs, including a solo homerun by Kameron Misner.

In the rubber match on Sunday, catcher Brett Bond got the scoring started with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the first, but the lead would not last.

By the end of the fifth, the Gamecocks had taken a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the eighth, Misner and Trey Harris both hit RBI singles, and pinch runner AJ Harris scored on a wild pitch. The Tigers closed out the series with a 5-3 win and won the series.

Mizzou will return to action this week against Eastern Kentucky and then travels to Knoxville this weekend to take on Tennessee.

Track and Field

The Tigers competed in the SEC championships in Columbia, SC this past weekend and took home four individual championships.

Junior Karissa Schweizer won the 5000 meter run, Gabi Jacobs won the discus, Jamie Kempher won the 10000 meter run, and Ja’Mari Ward won long jump.

This is the most since 2003, when Missouri won five individual events at the Big 12 championships.

Those that will advance to the NCAAs will compete in Austin, Texas from May 25-27.

Softball

The Tigers postseason began with a tough draw in the SEC tournament. They took on nationally ranked LSU and fell 6-5. Down 2-0, Natalie Fleming hit a two run single to tie the game. Then, a grand slam from LSU put them ahead for good. A three-run seventh inning nearly tied the game  for Missouri, but the rally fell short.

The 29-26 Tigers will head to Eugene, OR to take on Wisconsin in the Eugene regional on Friday.
