Many athletes don’t search for the media spotlight, while others bask in its glow. Mizzou defensive end Marcell Frazier would rather remain anonymous.

On Tuesday, Frazier expressed his displeasure with being a media subject, via Twitter. It’s tough to disagree with him, but at the same time, there are many fans who would appreciate a sound bite or two.

We don’t know what a given person is going through at any time, and even though we hold athletes to a higher standard, at the end of the day, they’re human beings, too.

More from Truman's Tales

Certainly, Frazier is intelligent enough to realize that if he receives an opportunity to play at a professional level, that he will likely have some amount of contractual obligation to speak with the media. Until then, I don’t care if he turns away any requests. Like he said, “I am still an amateur.”

The former three star recruit was the No. 2 athlete at his position in 2013. Last season, Frazier totaled 34 tackles and 8.5 sacks.

While a player might feel like nothing is gained from interviewing with the media, this could also be some backlash from recent negative attention brought on teammate and defensive end Nate Howard, and basketball commit Jeremiah Tilmon.

While most professional teams appreciate an athlete’s willingness to cooperate with media, but it’s not an end-all chance at becoming a professional.

Hopefully, this doesn’t turn into a distraction for the team as the season draws closer.

Next: Missouri has depth at quarterback

For the immediate future, Frazier will continue to concentrate on his play and tune out other distractions, including the media.
