Missouri Football: Tigers weren’t the only SEC team with low attendance

The Missouri Tigers held their spring football game over the weekend, but Columbia wasn’t the only SEC college town low on attendance.

I’m not sure why it even matters – it doesn’t – but some feel that attendance at a glorified scrimmage game should count for something. Well, the Missouri Tigers’ fan base wasn’t the only one lacking in attendance, so far.

In a recent post, only four SEC programs ranked top-10 in the attendance category. There are five programs yet to play their exhibition game, but in a 12-school conference, so far, only a third of the SEC ranked high in attendance.

Suffice to say, Missouri was not among the four top-10 programs, but with Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi State and LSU yet to host their respective spring games, that top-10 category should change, regardless, and it still won’t include Mizzou.

More from Truman's Tales

Auburn and South Carolina will likely fall out of the ranks, and Kentucky may be missing as well come next week. I fully expect Alabama, Georgia and LSU to have gaudy attendance numbers.

Maybe next year, Missouri will join the NCAA “elite” in setting attendance records for their Black and Gold game, but to be honest, I don’t really care what the attendance record is. The most important record is in the win-loss column, and the Tigers’ preparation to return to a bowl game in 2018.

Evidently, other programs are doing so well that they’re trying to win arbitrary “battles.” Meanwhile, Mizzou will continue to fly under the radar and win the battles that hold more weight come the fall.

Next: Tigers' success turns a new leaf

Let’s also keep in mind, last year’s attendance record for the Missouri spring game was unimpressive. While the Tigers’ start to the season was one to forget, Mizzou won the games it needed to make a post-season appearance.
