Drew Lock likely done for preseason
Drew Lock left Monday night’s game with an injured right hand
Drew Lock injured his hand in Monday night’s preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers.
Now, the rookie’s preseason appears to be over.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported through a source that the second-round pick was diagnosed with a bad sprain following an MRI on this throwing hand. Lock injured the hand in his second play of the third quarter.
The former Missouri quarterback scrambled left and escaped a sack by Jeremiah Valoaga before being tripped up by Marcell Harris, falling toward the ground while he tried to flip the ball out of his hands to avoid the sack.
He did so unsuccessful and instead banged his right hand on the turf. He came back in for one pass but left the game after he went back to the sideline to get checked out.
Lock is seeking a second medical option per ESPN.
"“I got out of the pocket and just ended up landing on that thumb,” Lock said after Monday’s game. “There are some videos out there, obviously, I am sure. It’s just a little sprain. It should be all right … I’ve jammed my thumb playing basketball 1,000 times. It kind of felt like a jammed thumb.”"
This is a big blow for the rookie’s chances at development this season. He was progressing after going 31 of 51 for 254 yards and a touchdown with an interception this preseason. He would have gotten a few more drives on Monday Night Football had he been able to continue in the game, and still had two more preseason games to continue to progress.
Now, he’ll enter the season likely as the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart and without as many reps he would have had entering the season.
But there still is hope for Lock. He showed flashes of his arm and scramble ability and appeared to be the Broncos’ second best QB on the team. Given time, he should make his way back to No. 2 on his way toward a starting job perhaps.
He’ll have to make up for loss time throughout practice during the season though, and will have to impress the coaches without much game tape to show he can move up into the backup role. For now, the backup job looks to go to Kevin Hogan. Joe Flacco is the starter.
