Missouri Tigers putting heartbreak behind them preparing for Georgia
The Missouri Tigers suffered a heartbreak of the worst possible kind last weekend at Auburn. The jubilation Auburn felt, the Missouri Tigers faithful were on the opposite end of the spectrum.
It is one thing to lose, especially on the road, when expected, as 7.5-point underdogs. It is another to drive the length of the field, late in the fourth quarter with a chance to close the game with a chip shot field goal. All of this amongst shaky coaching, and clock management, at best. And when I say a shot to close the game, I mean a shot at glory. A shot at redemption. A shot at avenging 2013. A shot at showing the SEC the Missouri Tigers are for real. I do not care where the Auburn football program is in 2022. This game meant so much more.
It is nearly impossible to lose a game in that fashion and not have some lasting effects. The end of the game was truly bizarre. Apparently Auburn was not supposed to lose that game. Mizzou Head Coach, Eli Drinkwitz elected to not slam home a victory, but rather to kneel and then kick a field goal, which Missouri kicker, Harrison Mevis missed. The rest of the game, however unfortunate and crazy as it may be, does not seem to matter.
Coach Drinkwitz has faced scrutiny for his lackluster and conservative play-calling since his arrival in Columbia. Of course, the fumble by Nathanial Peat, and some other circumstances were tough to swallow, but the game should have never gotten to that point.
So, what do we have? A Missouri Tigers football program shattered? Is this just another tough loss for a football team that cannot get out of its own way, and seems destined to never touch greatness? Maybe a little bit of both, but I will tell you this.
The Missouri Tigers are fully focused on the Georgia Bulldogs. The Bulldogs are the best team in the country and the defending National Champions. Anything short of extreme focus on the task at hand, and the Tigers will get blown out of the barn. While there is a strong likelihood that could happen irrelevant to Missouri’s focus, if they want to compete, they will need to be locked in, and must leave last week’s miserable finish in last week.
Looking forward to Missouri Tigers toughest challenge in years
