The Missouri Tigers entered the 2024 season with higher expectations than they’d had in the past decade. So far, however, the Tigers’ performance has been disappointing.
On Saturday, Mizzou picked up its second loss of the season, both of which have come in blowout fashion. Despite their 6-2 record, the Tigers have lost those two games by a combined 65 points. Notably, those losses came against the best two teams they’ve faced this season.
Mizzou's chances of making the College Football Playoff (CFP) now seem nearly out of reach. Given the strength of their schedule, it will be an uphill battle for the Tigers to contend for a playoff spot.
Even with the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff, Mizzou has just a 4% chance to make the playoffs this season, according to The Athletic.
The Tigers' remaining schedule is relatively weak, featuring home games against Oklahoma and Arkansas, along with road games at South Carolina and Mississippi State. Even if Mizzou were to finish the season 10-2, their resumé would likely leave them on the outside looking in for a playoff spot.
The 34-0 loss to Alabama on Saturday was essentially a CFP eliminator, with the early loss of starting quarterback Brady Cook putting the Tigers in a difficult spot. Cook's status for the remainder of the season is uncertain as Mizzou heads into a much-needed bye week.
One thing is certain: Mizzou won’t give up on the season. Fans can expect the Tigers to fight hard as they aim for another double-digit win season in Columbia.
