The wait is finally over for Missouri's star receiver Luther Burden III, who was selected No. 39 overall by the Chicago Bears on Friday night.

At first, there was certainly an element of surprise among draft analysts, as the Bears were not expected to select another pass-catcher. However, new head coach Ben Johnson had other ideas, signaling a clear intent to rebrand his offense.

Burden brings elite ability with the ball in his hands and showcases spectacular playmaking after the catch.

The East St. Louis native saw a statistical drop-off during his junior season, which contributed to his fall out of the first round. However, from a talent standpoint, Burden remains among the best in this draft class.

Will Burden work in Chicago?

The Bears are an intriguing landing spot for Burden, and certainly one that few expected heading into the weekend.

It became even more surprising when Chicago selected Michigan tight end Colston Loveland at No. 10 overall. Loveland is expected to line up alongside Bears veteran Cole Kmet, with Chicago likely leaning heavily on two-tight end sets — a personnel grouping new head coach Ben Johnson frequently utilized during his time in Detroit.

Alongside the tight ends, the Bears still feature savvy veteran DJ Moore and second-year receiver Rome Odunze. This sets up Burden to open the season as the team's third receiver in an offense loaded with playmakers.

Caleb Williams experienced an up-and-down rookie season in 2024, but expectations will be much higher in year two given the array of weapons now surrounding him.

Burden is an elite playmaker, and it will be exciting to see how Johnson chooses to utilize him. Despite a statistical drop-off last season, Burden continued to showcase his dynamic ability with the ball in his hands. Unfortunately for Mizzou, inconsistent quarterback play contributed to his underwhelming numbers in 2024.

The Bears and Johnson are a perfect pairing for Burden, and it will be interesting to see just how involved the rookie receiver will be, as he’s ready to step in and make an immediate impact.
