Missouri edge rusher Damon Wilson II is being sued by the University of Georgia over an unpaid buyout clause in his NIL contract. They are seeking $390,000 as a penalty for departing for the Tigers ahead of the 2025 season.
Now, Wilson's lawyer, Bogdan Susan, offered his first statement on the case to PowerMizzou on Friday.
"After all the facts come out, people will be shocked at how the University of Georgia treated a student-athlete," said Susan. "It has never been about the money for Damon, he just wants to play the game he loves and pursue his dream of playing in the NFL."
Georgia suit against Mizzou's Wilson takes an interesting turn
In the first comments from Wilson's camp, his lawyer indicates that money is the least important factor here, and that playing football was the only goal in mind. It's too hard to say at this point if the contract was broken intentionally or not. Last year, in a similar case, Wisconsin took legal action against cornerback Xavier Lucas for breaching his contract, but a resolution is still waiting on the courts system months after the initial accusations.
Wilson II, who enjoyed a breakout year with Missouri, racked up nine sacks to along with an interception. He spent his first two seasons at Georgia, but decided to enter the transfer portal in January.
Initially, Georgia paid Wilson II $30,000 out of a 14-month, $500,000 contract before he entered the portal just a few weeks later. There's sure to be more information coming out in the coming days and weeks, but the situation is far from resolved.
