The Missouri Tigers were thrilled to see their leading scorer, Caleb Grill, return to action Monday evening against the Alabama State Hornets. Grill had been sidelined for over a month after suffering a neck injury in the game against Lindenwood on November 27.

Since Grill’s absence, Mizzou's offense has struggled, with scoring decreasing across the board. Playing in his sixth collegiate season and second with the Tigers, Grill has been a key contributor, leading the team in points off the bench and serving as a reliable leader for his teammates.

Grill has been highly efficient this season, averaging 13 points and 3 assists per game on nearly 60% shooting from the field in seven appearances. He’s also contributed over a steal per game while keeping his turnovers and personal fouls under two per contest.

Though he come's off the bench, Grill has led the team in minutes three times this season and in points twice. However, during Monday evening’s win against the Hornets, he was clearly on a minutes restriction, playing just 11 minutes off the bench.

In his return, Grill shot 2-of-8 from the field, including two made three-pointers, finishing with 6 points and a steal on defense. The slow start was expected by head coach Dennis Gates and the team, as it’s common for players to need time to ramp up to full game speed before regaining their previous level of play. Ultimately, the Tigers are fortunate that he was able to return against Alabama State, giving him a tune up game ahead of No. 2 Auburn.

Gates, the coaching staff, and the team are undoubtedly ecstatic to have a player like Grill back on the court in any capacity. His effort, leadership, and genuine desire to contribute in any way possible are qualities that coaches admire. Gates has repeatedly emphasized the importance of these traits throughout the season, making Grill’s return even more significant for the Tigers.

Grill is expected to see increased minutes as he works his way back to his pre-injury form. His contributions will be crucial for Mizzou, especially as they prepare to face the No. 2 ranked Auburn Tigers on Saturday afternoon.
