After losing linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator DJ Smith to his alma mater three weeks ago, the Missouri Tigers moved quickly to find a replacement with extensive experience at major programs.
On Thursday morning, it was announced that Miami’s linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator Derek Nicholson is expected to join Mizzou in the same role next season, working alongside second-year defensive coordinator Corey Batoon.
Nicholson has steadily climbed the ranks in college football coaching, starting with stints at Southern Miss and Alcorn State before moving on to roles at Louisville and, most recently, Miami, where he spent the past two seasons.
Now, Nicholson will step into a challenging role in the SEC, tasked with defending against some of the most high-powered offenses in college football.
After his brief two-year NFL career came to an end, Nicholson quickly transitioned into the world of coaching.
Eli Drinkwitz worked closely with DJ Smith throughout his entire tenure, and it will be interesting to see how this latest defensive hire pans out for Mizzou.
