It’s been a quiet start to the offseason for head coach Dennis Gates and the Tigers. Although Gates has a strong track record as a recruiter, there’s been little activity so far, with many top transfers opting to join other programs.
The staff has filled one of the holes left by transfers Aidan Shaw and Marcus Allen by adding UCLA guard Sebastian Mack, but several scholarship spots remain available.
Now, the Tigers lose another piece in freshman Peyton Marshall, a former four-star recruit coming out of high school.

Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Marshall stands at 7 feet tall and weighs 300 pounds, giving him a massive presence in the paint.
Marshall never truly cracked the rotation as a freshman — an expected outcome for many first-year bigs, but frustrating nonetheless. He appeared in 22 games, averaging just four minutes per contest with one point and one rebound.
Despite the small sample size, Marshall’s offensive struggles were evident. He had difficulty finishing, even around the rim, and was prone to frequent turnovers.
Marshall also converted just 5 of his 19 free-throw attempts on the season, highlighting his struggles at the line.
Marshall showed flashes on defense, recording six blocks and six steals, but also committed 19 personal fouls and 12 turnovers. Head coach Dennis Gates was hoping to see growth heading into his sophomore season, where Marshall was expected to compete for more consistent minutes.
His best moment came during the Tigers’ late comeback win over the California Golden Bears. Marshall was called upon and delivered, making key contributions when the team needed him most.
He finished that game with a career-high six points and added three rebounds on perfect 3-for-3 shooting in a career-high 14 minutes of action.
With Marshall’s departure, Mizzou’s roster now sits at 13 players, with multiple scholarships still available for head coach Dennis Gates to use in the transfer portal. He may look to add a big man to fill the void left on an already young roster.
