New Mizzou QB Austin Simmons may be the key to landing major receiver transfer

New Missouri quarterback Austin Simmons has only officially been a Tiger for just a few days, but he's already been active on the recruiting trail for Eli Drinkwitz.

Just yesterday, he responded to Louisville transfer CJ Mays' social media post, hyping up the Missouri facilities, and Mays committed just hours later. Now though, Simmons might possibly have a hand in landing one of the biggest transfers for Mizzou yet.

Ole Miss receiver Cayden Lee entered the portal at the last second, and within minutes, Simmons reacted on social media with a simple, yet telling, smiley face. The two were teammates at Ole Miss for two seasons and are reportedly close.

“I feel like me and Austin’s relationship goes like beyond the football field, said Lee. "We’re like best friends.“ Simmons mirrored that sentiment. “It’s always been close [the relationship] since I enrolled. We’ve just gotten so much closer over time," he said.

So could the former Rebel receiver be joining his quarterback at Mizzou?

Austin Simmons might be the one to land big-time wide receiver for the Tigers

Lee has been very productive at Ole Miss, totaling 106 catches for 1,623 yards and seven touchdowns over three seasons. He would instantly become a top option in the Tiger offense. And while it's not exactly clear what Simmons was reacting to in his post, there are some pretty easy dots to connect there.

The Tigers have already added some solid receivers in the portal like Horatio Fields from Auburn and Caleb Goodie out of Cincinnati, but after losing nearly all their top pass catchers from last year there's plenty of room for Lee and his talents.

Lee is likely to hear from several top programs in the country, so here's to hoping that friendship wins out and the former Rebel is headed to Columbia.
