Despite a 5-1 start to the season, Mizzou football has looked far from pretty through its first six games. The Tigers have dominated inferior opponents, but their one real test resulted in an embarrassing loss at College Station.

On Saturday, Mizzou will have a chance to secure a major bounce-back win against an Auburn team that is better than its 2-4 record suggests. The Tigers from the South have lost multiple games by less than one score, and if they had limited turnovers, their record could easily be reversed.

If Mizzou starts slow once again, there will be real concern in Columbia. Coming into the season, Mizzou had sky-high expectations, but after hitting rock bottom against Texas A&M, fans are left wondering when they’ll get to see the team's full potential.

A major factor in Mizzou's slow starts has been the lackluster play from quarterback Brady Cook. After ending the 2023 season on a high note with a Cotton Bowl victory, the senior captain simply hasn’t lived up to expectations. Many speculate that Cook may be playing through an injury, as he’s looked more like his 2022 self than the quarterback who led the team to an 11-win season last year.

Not only is this a massive 'get right' game for Mizzou, but it's also a revenge game after a bitter loss to Auburn in 2022. With several players from that team still on the roster, including Cook, the 17-14 overtime defeat remains fresh in their minds. Mizzou squandered multiple chances to seal the win, and the loss was a significant setback at the time.

Saturday is the most important game of the season to date for Mizzou, as the team is in dire need of a momentum-boosting victory.

Coach Drinkwitz should have his squad ready to go, and with homecoming festivities starting early, Faurot Field will be electric by the 11 a.m. kickoff.
