Mizzou Pitcher, Ryan Magdic, Drafted by Oakland Athletics
By Zach Sweet
Every summer in mid-July, the MLB Draft always has a way of rolling up on fans. It is the longest draft, and often times hard to follow for an average viewer. However, with the 20 round draft, hundreds of more opportunities are provided.
Missouri has seen a handful of pitching prospects reach the MLB in recent years, including an all-star selection in 2024, with Tanner Houck of the Boston Red Sox. Towards the end of the draft, you'll typically see college athletes selected to fill spots in organizations, and potentially surprise a lot of people.
In this years draft, Missouri had three pitchers selected on the final day. Let's take a look at the first one drafted in Ryan Magdic.
Who is Ryan Magdic?
The first Tiger selection came in the 14th round, when the Oakland Athletics selected Ryan Magdic with pick No. 406. The 6-foot-5, 240 pound Canadian is a lefty with tons of potential. Last season, Magdic pitched to the tune of a 4.63 ERA, tossing just 35.0 innings.
Prior to his lone season at Missouri, he played Division-II baseball for Florida Southern. In his time there he was viewed as a hitter, and only recently began his pitching career. Magdic is a project that can be developed into a solid arm in the future.
The Oakland Athletics definitely will be happy with the pick, as Magdic has a ton of promise given this was the first year of his pitching career. His velocity was around 92-96 MPH, but of course that can be developed in time. Magdic held his own in the best conference in college baseball, with no college pitching experience prior. It will be fun to watch him develop in the Athletics organization.
