Missouri's defense shines bright in season-opening shutout
By Zach Sweet
When the ball was kicked off on Thursday night and Murray State attempted a surprise onside kick, they had practically conceded the game. Facing the No. 11 team in the country is no small task, and the Racers quickly realized they were in for a long night.
Missouri were 50-point favorites, so the final score isn't entirely surprising. However, the group that exceeded expectations was the Tigers' defense. They held Murray State to just two first downs through the first three quarters. Overall, the Racers managed only 85 yards of offense, including just 25 passing yards.
Pressure was relentless, with nearly every Missouri player making an impact on the field. It’s hard to single out a "star" as the game was a display of dominance from the opening kick to the final whistle. The Tigers' defense looked quicker, stronger, and tougher, outworking the Racers for a full 60 minutes while securing a 51-0 shutout victory.
Mizzou's tackles leader was Miami transfer Corey Flagg, who seemed to be everywhere on the field. Notably, he blew up a third-and-one play in the backfield, dropping Murray State four yards back and forcing a punt. After the game, Flagg praised the Tigers' morale throughout the contest.
"The brotherhood here is the best I've ever been a part of. There are no egos, it's all about winning and being 1-0 each week."
It’s clear the entire team has bought in and will be ready to go every week this season. The defense as a whole made a strong statement on Thursday night, and it will be exciting to watch this unit continue to grow as the season progresses.
Missouri is back in action next Saturday night, hosting Buffalo at Faurot Field. While it should present a slightly tougher challenge, Missouri is expected to be heavy favorites once again.
