Through the first two weeks of the season, No. 6 Missouri has been dominant with shutout wins over Murray State and Buffalo. While Missouri’s opponents haven’t provided much resistance, Eli Drinkwitz’s team has been shooting itself in the foot with penalties and that’s continuing in a Week 3 ranked matchup against No. 24 Boston College.

On Missouri’s final drive of the third quarter with a 24-14 lead over the Tigers were flagged for 53 yards of penalties and faced a ridiculous second-and-59 from its own 14-yard line.

On the possession, star wide receiver Luther Burden was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, then Missouri was penalized for an ineligible man downfield, then Burden was penalized again for a personal foul. After the Luke Bauer punt, Missouri was called for another five-yard penalty that allowed BC to set up shop at its 35-yard line.

Through the game, Missouri has been penalized eight times for 90 yards while Boston College has only been penalized four times for 25 yards. After that disastrous possession, Missouri forced BC quarterback Thomas Castellanos into his second interception of the game.

Missouri has gained 396 total yards midway through the fourth quarter of this one, but penalties have stalled out multiple drives. Burden, who was penalized twice for 15-yard infractions, leads the Tigers in receiver with five catches for 106 yards and a touchdown.

Frustration was clearly setting in for Burden and the rest of the Tigers, and Eli Drinkwitz spoke with ESPN’s sideline reporter Alyssa Lang after scolding his star receiver, and said, “We gotta just focus on this play. Let me worry about the officials.”
