Mizzou Baseball: Trevor Austin Signs UDFA Deal with Astros
By Zach Sweet
With the MLB Draft behind us, MLB organizations are actively looking to sign Undrafted Free Agents (UDFA's). Among those seeking a new home was University of Missouri graduate, Trevor Austin. The four-year utility man is from Jefferson City, Missouri.
News broke Wednesday afternoon that Austin had signed with the Houston Astros on a Free Agent contract. In his time at Mizzou, he showed the ability to do it all in the field, playing both second base and left field. Over his last three seasons at Missouri, Austin has played in 148 out of their 150 games.
What makes Trevor Austin a good fit for the Houston Astros?
Austin grew up just 30 minutes away from Columbia, Missouri. Attended Helias High School, he made headlines as one of the top prospects in the state. The shortstop decided to stay close to home and committed to Mizzou.
As a freshman, Austin saw few opportunities, only playing in 21 games for the Tigers. By his sophomore season, he started 40 of the teams 42 games. Reached base at a .417 clip, and adding some power with six homers. When his junior year came around, Austin had a career year, recording personal bests in nearly every hitting category. After a very similar senior season, many thought Austin could be drafted.
Austin has a ton of potential, and continues to improve each year. The Houston Astros could be a perfect fit for him to develop quickly.
He becomes the fourth Mizzou player from the 2024 squad to be signed by an MLB organization. Austin is the first non-pitcher to accomplish this feat. He will be joined by his college teammate, Bryce Mater, who was selected in the 16th-round by the Astros.
