Mizzou Football: Phillip Roche Misses Practice after being Arrested on Monday Night
By Zach Sweet
On Monday night in Columbia, Missouri, football safety Phillip Roche was arrested after disregarding three separate warrants for his required court attendance. These warrants were issued earlier this year after Roche missed multiple hearings related to his numerous speeding tickets.
Roche is just 19 years old and is set to begin his sophomore season for Mizzou in 2024. He appeared in 11 games last season, mostly on special teams. The native of Crown Point, Indiana, was a three-star recruit coming out of high school.
Roche was released on Monday night after being booked and reportedly attended practice on Tuesday morning. It is unclear whether the team will suspend him, but he was not present at practice on Wednesday.
"The program is handling the situation through normal university processes," said Dave Matter, a spokesperson for the team.
The safety has failed to report for up to eight court hearings across at least five different cases. He has been charged with Class B misdemeanors for exceeding the speed limit by more than 20 miles per hour.
Roche began to make an impact on the team late in the season and was expected to see more playing time in his second year. With three years of eligibility remaining, the Tigers have seen a lot of promise in their young playmaker. If he can resolve his off-field issues, it would be great to see his impact on the program.
With the team handling the issue, there are no current updates, but more is certainly to come on this story. Missouri's first game is now less than a month away, as they are set to host Murray State on August 29th.
