As the season progresses into the new year, each game carries increasing significance for postseason aspirations. This is particularly true during conference play, where teams like the Missouri Tigers will have opportunities to capitalize on their matchups, as they demonstrated today.
Although the Tigers led throughout the game, building a lead as large as 17 late in the first half, Vanderbilt showed resilience, refusing to back down despite the significant deficits.
After an impressive 11-0 run that extended Mizzou's lead to 17, Vanderbilt countered with a 9-0 run of their own, quickly cutting into the deficit. The Commodores' resilience and refusal to let the game slip away kept them within striking distance and posed challenges for Mizzou until the final whistle.
The Tigers' shooting numbers may not have been their best, but a well-rounded team effort secured the victory. When shots weren’t falling, it was encouraging to see players adjust by facilitating ball movement and finding other ways to generate offense, rather than forcing attempts.
Mizzou's defense was outstanding, effectively limiting Vanderbilt's scoring opportunities. Despite the Tigers posting a season-low 75 points, they didn’t let the reduced offensive output hold them back, consistently finding ways to create and capitalize on scoring chances when needed.
The starting lineup delivered its best scoring performance of the season, with four of the five starters contributing nine or more points. Senior Caleb Grill provided a spark off the bench, adding 13 points on 4-of-9 shooting. However, outside of Grill and Marques Warrick’s five points, the bench remained silent, failing to score beyond those two players.
The starting five were highly efficient, shooting 18-of-28 from the field, including 7-of-11 from beyond the arc, and 14-of-22 from the free-throw line. They also closed the game on a strong note, responding to Vanderbilt’s late push that cut the lead to two with a decisive 7-0 run in the final two minutes, securing Mizzou’s 75-66 victory.
Mark Mitchell had an outstanding performance, leading the team with 19 points while also contributing 7 rebounds, his second-highest total in a game this season.
Mitchell was efficient offensively, shooting 6-of-11 from the field and a solid 7-of-9 from the free-throw line. He started the game strong and delivered a clutch and-one in the final minute to seal the victory for Mizzou.
Anthony Robinson II had a standout offensive performance, recording 15 points on a flawless 4-of-4 shooting while also going 5-of-9 from the free-throw line. He showcased his playmaking ability with 8 assists, consistently creating opportunities for his teammates, and added 3 steals on the defensive end to round out an impressive all-around game.
The guards were exceptionally efficient, combining for just two turnovers throughout the game. Their control and decision-making were key to smoothly guiding the offense to success.
Trent Pierce and Tamar Bates also contributed as starters, each scoring 9 points and knocking down multiple three-pointers to aid Mizzou's offensive effort.
Big man Josh Gray came off the bench and, while he didn’t score, made a significant impact on the boards with 11 rebounds, including 4 on the offensive end that created key second-chance scoring opportunities for the Tigers.
Overall, the performance was highly encouraging from an offensive perspective. When their usual offensive strategies weren’t clicking and several players struggled early, the Tigers adjusted effectively, overcoming a slow first half to find ways to generate scoring opportunities.
However, as they’ve done all season, the Tigers adapted under head coach Dennis Gates. When faced with adversity, Gates guided his team to find alternative ways to distribute the ball effectively and maintain consistent scoring.
This victory marks Mizzou's 13th win of the season, all coming at home. It also serves as their second consecutive conference win, improving their SEC record to 2-1. Notably, they have already surpassed last season’s total conference wins just three games into SEC play.
Mitchell, Robinson, and the rest of the Tigers can savor this victory at Mizzou Arena, but they'll need to quickly refocus with another significant conference matchup on the horizon.
Mizzou will hit the road to face the No. 8-ranked Florida Gators on Tuesday night.
