During Missouri's 84-74 win over Auburn, the Tigers recevied some much need help from Trent Pierce, who is still ramping back up from injury. Pierce played 28 minutes off the bench and racked up 18 points, three rebounds and three assists.

Meanwhile, Pierce was struggling just to stay on the court. He admitted later that is game-shape is still a work in progress, going as far to say he even wanted out of the game at one point. Coach Dennis Gates, however, had other ideas.

"Tell the truth," Gates said with a smile before Pierce could explain himself. The pair shared a laugh before Pierce gave an update on his conditioning.

"I think playing basketball for so long you learn how to pay tired," said Pierce. "I mean I was gassed. I had to tell coach to pull me out. So I'm exhausted. I'm still trying to get back to in-game shape, to where I don't need to pull myself out."

Gates followed up Pierce immediately by saying there was no chance he was taking his star player out.

"During the game he was so tired he looked at me, and I looked away. I said I'm ignoring you," Gates laughed.

Gates has a special connection with his players

This was one of dozens of interactions caught on tape this season of Gates having a great moment with one of his players. The entire back and forth was light-hearted and full of respect for each other. So while Gates has been chastised at times for his coaching, there's no question he has the full support of the team.

Mizzou is now 3-1 in SEC play, tied for first, and 13-4 on the season. Still, despite the impressive record, the Tigers are lacking quality wins outside of of Florida and Kentucky, and stil have a tough hill to climb to make the NCAA Tournament.

They'll head to face LSU on Jan. 17 for their next contest.
