Missouri Tigers Baseball Falls In Series Finale With A&M

The Missouri Tigers Baseball Team fell in a rubber match with No. 1 Texas A&M in College Station on Sunday afternoon by a score of 14-6. Mizzou was unable to overcome the hitting prowess of the first-ranked Aggies and the defensive effort that appeared just a day prior seemed absent from their game.

The Tigers fell to a 20-9 overall record and a 6-3 record in Southeastern Conference play.

In stark contrast to the previous game of the series, Mizzou couldn’t keep A&M from reaching home plate. The Aggies rounded the bases on two hits early on, as junior pitcher Peter Fairbanks allowed four runs and two home runs in the first three innings alone.

As the game turned to the middle innings, it was clear Mizzou didn’t have it in the third game of the series, as Texas A&M sent 13 batters to the plate in the sixth inning, where the Aggies put the gas on the tank. Eventually, the Aggies scored their 14 runs on 17 hits—both season highs allowed my MU this season.

Despite the beat down, this series was still a good measuring stick for the Tigers, and a good lesson to learn as they try to continue the season that has otherwise been very successful so far.

Mizzou baseball fans should take a positive feeling away from this series. While the last game wasn’t ideal, it doesn’t mean that Mizzou can’t hang with the big boys. The Tigers played tough in the first game, won the second and showed that their top-25 ranking is still deserved.

The voters may decide kick MU out of the rankings, but I don’t think a 2-1 series loss to the nation’s clearly best team in baseball is warranted of removing them from the top 25.

Mizzou will get more chances to play Texas A&M and other powerful teams in the country as we move forward.

The best part about it all may be that this team is young and still has a lot to learn. These players will pick up a lot and mature as the season rolls along. Perhaps the Tigers will outlast the Aggies in a series down the road.

For now, a lot to hang their hat on.
