Mizzou football: Garrett on the lookout for Butkus Award

Cale Garrett is in his senior season and looking to help the Mizzou defense as it brings back its middle linebacker.

Let the watchlists continue to roll in for Mizzou football. 

Missouri linebacker Cale Garrett landed on the Butkus Award Watch List, which was released Monday. The Butkus award is given annually to the nation’s top linebacker.

After two consistent seasons, Garrett looks to save his best output for his last year.

The Kearney, Missouri, native had 106 tackles last season, six for loss, after recording 99 tackles and 10 tackles for loss his sophomore year. He’s had four sacks over the two seasons in which he has played in all 26 games for Mizzou.

This is the second preseason watch list Garrett is on after it was announced he was added to the Bednarik Award, given to the nation’s best defensive player. Fifty-one players are on the Butkus watchlist. Last year’s winner was LSU’s Devin White, who was drafted No. 5 overall in this season’s NFL Draft. Fourteen SEC players are on this year’s list.

Several Mizzou players have been added to the Butkus watchlists over the past five seasons, including Terez Hall last season and Kentrell Brothers and Michael Scherer.

Garrett is the second Tiger to be added to multiple watchlists.

Joining Garrett on the lookout for awards: Albert Okwuegbunam, who was named to the Biletnikoff Award (receiver) and John Mackey Award (tight end); Larry Rountree, who is on the Doak Walker Award list (running back); Trystan Colon-Castillo was added to the Rimington Trophy list (center); and quarterback Kelly Bryant was named to the Maxwell Award watchlist, an award handed out to the the nation’s most outstanding college football player.
