A few tweaks in the depth chart, but not much has changed for Mizzou football.
The Mizzou football team is set heading to Wyoming for its opening game of the season.
On Tuesday, the Tigers released their depth chart for Week 1. FYI, Kelly Bryant is the starting quarterback.
We’ll start wit the defense, as the biggest surprise heading into the first game of the season was at cornerback.
Sophomore cornerback Jarvis Ware won the top job to start the year as he is listed as the starting cornerback next to senior DeMarcus Acy. Ware shot up the depth chart after entering camp a backup and was competing for a No. 3 or 4 spot. He beat out Christian Holmes, who started eight games last season for the Tigers.
Holmes is listed as the backup to Ware and Adam Sparks is the backup for Acy.
Another surprise is last year’s starter Khalil Oliver is a co-starter with Ronnell Perkins. The battle is close and they will split time in Wyoming. In the original depth chart, Perkins was the No. 1 guy. As for the freshman battle to back up strong safety to Tyree Gillespie, Martez Manuel beat out Jalani Williams.
Defensive end Trajan Jeffcoat is injured and will not play in Week 1. His spot goes to sophomore Jatorian Hansford while Tre Williams moves up to No. 2. Kobie Whiteside still has the No. 1 spot at his defensive tackle position over Akial Byers.
We pretty much knew all of the starters on offense for Mizzou football, but the biggest camp battles were at backup quarterback and the wide receivers. The biggest surprise is that freshman Maurice Massey is the backup to senior transfer Jonathan Nance.
Sophomores Jalen Knox and Kam Scott are listed as co-starters for the other outside WR position.
As for backup QB, Taylor Powell appears to have won the job as he is listed No. 2. He was No. 2 heading into camp and likely way going to win the job.
For special teams, Tyler Badie is the kick returner while Richaud Floyd, who moved from receiver to cornerback this year, is the punt returner.
Senior Tucker McCann is the kicker and punter.
