Chase Daniel leads Chicago Bears to key NFC North victory

Former Mizzou football quarterback Chase Daniel again proved how valuable he is.

The former Tiger stepped into his Week 4 game against division rival Minnesota Vikings and led the Chicago Bears to a 16-6 victory Sunday at home.

Daniel subbed in after starting quarterback Mitchell Trubisky had to leave with a left shoulder injury in the first quarter.

The veteran passed for 195 yards and a touchdown on 22 of 30 passes with no turnovers. The win moved the Bears into a half-game behind the first-place Green Bay Packers while jumping ahead of the Detroit Lions and Vikings.

Daniel can lead a team, that’s for sure.

It has yet to be determined if Daniel will start next week’s game against the Oakland Raiders in London. The Bears aren’t sure how serious Trubisky’s injury is just yet.

This is the second year in a row Daniel has stepped in for an injured Trubisky. Last season, Daniel played in five games, including back-to-back starts for the Bears, where he went 1-1. Daniel led the Bears to an NFC North victory over the Lions on Thanksgiving, helping the Bears to a 12-4 record and eventual NFC North crown in 2018.

Daniel is 2-2 as a starter in the NFL, picking up a 1-1 record while with the Kansas City Chiefs. Daniel also has played for the New Orleans Saints and the Philadelphia Eagles.

He entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent by Washington in 2009. Not many expected Daniel’s career to last more than a decade. It could last a lot more years if he keeps showing his worth, just as he did Sunday.

Daniel continues to prove the value in a backup quarterback. Now, he has a good chance of leaving his mark in Chicago, especially if Trubisky has to sit a while.

There probably won’t be a quarterback controversy in Chicago. The Bears took Trubiksy No. 2 overall in 2017 (the same draft Patrick Mahomes went to the Chiefs at No. 10). But if Daniel has to step in next week, he could lift the Bears to a 4-1 record before a bye week comes in Week 6.

In other Mizzou quarterback news, the Denver Broncos dropped to 0-4 on Sunday. So maybe Drew Lock will start when he is healthy.
