Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Drew Lock is back on the field practicing. He appears to be better than the last time he practiced.

When the Denver Broncos drafted quarterback Drew Lock in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the Broncos believed they were getting a future starter for their franchise. The former Mizzou quarterback was one of the top prospects in the draft, and was the fourth quarterback taken.

Lock started four years in the SEC, and had plenty of reps throughout the preseason, even though it was cut short because of a thumb injury. He is more ready than several other rookie QBs who were thrown into a starting role throughout the years.

After placing Joe Flacco on injured reserve, the Broncos decided to start Brandon Allen for now. The former Arkansas Razorback won his first game and will get a second start this weekend. His backup is former practice squad QB Brett Rypien. Lock is near ready to take over.

Lock practiced for the first time since the summer this past week. He threw one of the best incomplete passes ever said pass rusher Von Miller, according to USA Today’s For the Win.

"“I just want to be here when he gets famous. He’s gonna kill it. He’s gonna kill it. He’s got everything you need. The other day, he ran out and did a little bootleg, and he threw it — it was an incomplete pass. But I’ve seen a lot of good ones play, and that was probably the best incomplete pass that I’ve seen thrown. He has a little flip up. He’s just a star in the making.”"

Broncos coach Vic Fangio said time off has helped Lock, reported the Denver Post.

"“I think the time off in some ways, although you never want it, helped him,” Fangio said on Thursday. “I think he learned a lot whereas, when he was going through it in the spring and training camp before he got hurt, it was piling up on him I think."

For now, the Broncos have a three-week window to activate Lock from injured reserve. If that’s what they decide, Lock will be able to move to the No. 2 or even the No. 1 spot on the roster.

What Lock gives the team is a young QB ready to learn while he plays, and even if it goes poorly, the Broncos pretty much have no where else to turn.  They are not going to win the division this year. While Allen showed promise in his first start, that won’t be the long-term solution, so they have to see what they have in Lock.

John Elway needs to see what he has in Lock as soon as he is 100 percent. Washington is starting Dwayne Haskins. The New York Giants are starting Daniel Jones. The Arizona Cardinals are starting Kyler Murray. And the Cincinnati Bengals are starting Ryan Finley.
