The best game of the decade

No. 11 Missouri 36, No. 1 Oklahoma 27, Oct. 24, 2010

The MU Tigers fans already voted. We’re not going to argue with that. This is the No. 1 game of the 2010s.

Before the 2019 season kicked off, mutigers.com put out a poll of the best games of the decade. The No. 1 game went to Mizzou’s victory over the No. 1-ranked Oklahoma Sooners in 2010.

The day started with “College GameDay” in town to take in the morning of a big game between two near-top-10 teams at Mizzou for Homecoming. Oklahoma came in as the top team while Mizzou sat just outside the top 10 at No. 11. Missouri and Oklahoma were close throughout the contest before Missouri came from behind in the final quarter to take the victory. Blaine Gabbert led the charge, going 30-for-42 for 308 yards and a touchdown.

The game opened up as great as it should have — an 86-yard kick return from Gahn McGaffie. That set the tone for the night, as Mizzou was sure to take down the Sooners for the first time under coach Gary Pinkel. Fourteen seconds in, Mizzou had a 7-0 lead.

Oklahoma QB Landry Jones led Oklahoma after that and less than three minutes into the game it was tied at 7. Running back De’Vion Moore and kicker Grant Ressel added scores for Mizzou, while Jones threw another TD to mark the score 17-14 Mizzou at halftime.

Ressel’s second kick was good and Mizzou was up 20-14, but Jones’ third TD throw sent the Sooners into the fourth quarter with a one-point lead. That’s when Mizzou took over.

The Tigers collected a 38-yard TD from Gabbert to Jerrell Jackson, followed by a Zaviar Gooden interception a play later that set Mizzou up with another Ressel field goal. That marked the score 29-21, and James Franklin pounced into the end zone minutes later to give the Tigers a 15-point lead.

Oklahoma’s Trey Millard had a rushing score, but the Sooners could never cut the lead back to one possession, and Mizzou left Faurot Field with the victory and still undefeated, while the Sooners suffered their first loss of the season.

Nearly 10 years later, it still is one of the best games in Mizzou history. And it is the best game of the 2010s decade for the Missouri football team.
