Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz is all for the College Football Playoff expanding, but he is giving an absurd number of teams for the expansion. While speaking at SEC media days, Drinkwitz gave his insight on the expansion of the playoff, suggesting that it goes to 30 teams, which seems a bit outrageous.

Drinkwitz believes that expanding the playoff to 30 teams would give more opportunities not only to the teams and coaches but also to the fan bases and bring in more revenue. Now, this 30-team playoff would include automatic bids and play-in games that could simulate the same structure that the March Madness basketball tournament has.

Now, you're talking about an opportunity for 30 teams, 30 fanbases to be excited and engaged, engaged in giving revenue," Drinkwitz said. "You’ve got 30 teams with players who have access to compete for a championship, so for me, I think it makes a lot more sense."

Could this cause any problems with the college football season?

While the number seems insane, there is something intriguing about Drinkwitz's idea. Having more teams gives a bigger opportunity for a playoff birth, and the margin for error is lower within the regular season. The big problem with a 30-team playoff is the length of the postseason. The college football season has 12 regular season games that end Thanksgiving weekend, adn then the championship weekend roughly a week later.

So, by going for a bigger playoff, it either needs to start sooner or will go later, which means a longer season than these college players are accustomed to. So, there is still a lot to be looked at before just saying there will be an expansion to 30 teams. Look at how long it took to decide on expanding to 12 teams.

So while the idea is intriguing, more needs to be ironed out. Drinkwitz certainly made some interesting points that might be worth looking into.
