New 5-7 format approved by the College Football Playoff Committee
The headlines when the four-team playoff had been set in 2023 did not talk about who got in, but who got left out. Florida State has done everything that the College Football Playoff Committee typically asked teams to do in order to make it in. They went undefeated and won the conference, however, when it came down to it, the Committee came back and said it wasn't good enough.
The Seminoles lost Jordan Travis, which the Committee says had nothing to do with thier decision, but most fans know it had everything to do with it. They also said they did not have a strong enough schedule even though they played in the Power 5. Georgia was another team that didn't make it in because of a late-season conference championship loss to Alabama, who had a loss int he regular season.
These teams made headlines almost as much as the teams that made it did. So, are things going to be magically fixed with the 12-team expansion, well what was just approved might help.
The CFP will now have a 5-7 format, which means the five conference champions will have an automatic spot in the playoffs, similar to how March Madness has it with thier conference champions. Now for the remaining seven spots, those will be for the seven next best teams. So teams that maybe came in second in their conference, because of divisions in their conference have the second-best record and couldn't compete in the conference champion have a chance to make it in.
So how does this benefit Missouri fans? Well, exactly for what I said above. If Missouri can finish say third in the SEC behind the conference champion and the team they beat, if the Tigers have a good enough record, they could have a good chance of making it in.
With how the Tigers played in 2023, this could be their best shot at making it into the playoff and contending for a National Championship.
